Last Friday 333′s Benoit Daoust and Evan Shuster were on location at Joe’s Prop House shooting the music video “Stop” by Rime; singer of the international hit “yalla habibi”. The 3 minute-long video took 333 and Rime over 4 months to plan and prepare.

5 completely different scenes, 5 different make-up styles, 5 costumes, 5 different lighting techniques, all captured in 1 day! The idea was to have at least 4 very contrasting scenes to emphasize the story and Rime’s lyrics.

The video itself takes the viewer through numerous daydreams and plays with the perception between reality and fiction. The song’s climax highlights the choreography done by Rime herself, and backed up by Marybel Mayorga and Silvy Pelletier. All three dressed up in simple yet elegant costumes that fit the setting perfectly.

333 would like to thank the great team that supported our concept and made this video come through. Some of the outstanding talent included Julie Plante (Beauty Individualist/Make-up Artist), Houda Gasmi (Stylist), Karine Rossignol (Hair Stylist), Peter Panagiotis (Model), Laurence Payant & Anouck Goulet, (set design), and many more!

Stay tuned for the official music video release.

There is something about seeing a logo branded onto anything and almost everything that is very pleasing to the eye. Especially when you are so invested into a particular brand. In a way this is the base structure of creating a feel and emotion behind an identity; where and how the logo is embedded, printed, and placed onto a certain medium. What a logo means to an individual and society is only the result of great original placement from the inception or relaunching of a company.

If a logo is well designed, or a type is well treated, it translates nicely. We can look at the example of the Helvetica type face. It is the most common used font in design. So common designers consider it to be air, it’s everywhere. The one reason people use this type face so much, is that many say it’s flawless, and thus looks good on anything. On top of that, the Helvetica family can be used in almost any industry such as a doctor, lawyer, dentist, artist, designer etc. and still give a unique emotion or feel.

When we look at the logo that was created for Rich Ozcanian (DJ Hostyle) last year, we were very content to see how solid the treatment was. The design is black and white and takes on the color of the medium it’s printed on.

Currently 333 is in development with DJ Hostyle to create his new website, photos, and more. The start of his marketing is but of course a CD design so that he can get his music to the masses. Below you can see the beauty of color, yet with a non-colored design. The CD foil comes through and a rainbow can be seen when looking at it from certain angles.

First off we would like to thank all of our clients, readers, and supporters. 2011 was a great year and we are very excited to get started on projects that are lined up for 2012. Some include music videos for Montreal music artists including Grammy Nominated Jonathan Emile. We are also currently developing an online store for Bod & Christensen, who is a jacket design company, which will be launched any day.

We have added a lot of work to our portfolio, including a completely revamped fashion section of works from Benoit Lamothe, and Hugo Hamaoui. We now have an official typography section of pieces from Evan Shuster. Also for your viewing pleasure, all of the work that was featured in the blog from 2011 has been added to our portfolio.

1st-Round-Grammy™ Nominated Jonathan Emile has been working closely with Evan Shuster and Benoit Daoust from the 333 team. We have had the enjoyment to produce a 6 part video series titled “This Is Not My Music Video” in 2011, and also a Lupe Fiasco cover video. Receiving great feedback, both Jonathan and 333 continue to push the limits for the next project. We are currently developing a few videos for Jonathan including a promotional piece, and a music video for his next single, which will be shot in March.

The work that 333 creates is special because in a society that assumes photos are created almost all in post production, leaves the viewer surprised. The catch phrase “just photoshop it after” has become very much misunderstood. If possible, creating a special effect and or look should be done in camera, on set, or on location, and that is exactly what we did when creating the CD graphic for the single “Heaven Help Dem” by Kendrick Lamar and Jonathan Emile.

Using one of Evan Shuster’s typography techniques, he developed a purely black and white graphic, which was then printed on acetate. The graphic was then photographed, and lit on fire. Having the fire burn uncontrollably is the beauty of making art in this form. It takes precision and skill to know where to start the burn, so that the fire rips through the graphic exactly how we wanted it to.

2012 has kicked off to a great start! January is almost over, and we have already had our talent put towards some interesting projects. 333 and our sister company e-comstudio have been working closely with Bod & Christensen; a leather design company based out of Montreal. They mainly deal in jackets, bags, and wallets with a clean modern and classy taste.

“At Bod & Christensen we design leather for life: durable, comfortable, casual and sexy. We source the finest skins worldwide and employ precise craftsmen who take pride in each piece. Our designers are contemporary innovators, translating the city streets into effortless style.” – bod&christensen.com

Both 333 and e-comstudio are handling Bod & Christensen’s new online store, which will be launched in a few weeks, their campaign and e-commerce photography, print look book, and photo documentation of their design studios.

Here are a couple of photos of their design studio to hold you off until the official relaunch of Bod & Christensen.

In the new era of computer art, there has always been a constant debate between creating an art piece in its true physical form, compared to using a computer to achieve a wanted result. We can use the example of a portrait of a woman holding a sign with the word “hello”. The photo can be very believable to almost anyone, but the word “hello” was actually placed on the sign only after digitally.

Depending on the application and situation, costs may overweight doing the wanted effect in reality. To add to the debate, when doing a project the client may think that creating all of the special effects can be done in post-production. In some cases they are right, and many can be created, but the work and time that goes into this challenge is usually misunderstood. Changing the background of a photo can take 20 minutes to do flawlessly, compared to 5 minutes of properly lighting the set. A 15 minute difference is not a big deal, but just think of doing 100 images… Green screening for video can lead to hours of post production and a huge bill for the client.

“The work that I create is special because in a society that assumes photos are created almost all in post production, leaves the viewer surprised. The catch phrase “just photoshop it after” has become very much misunderstood. Creating a special effect and or look should be done in camera, on set, and or on location etc. To give an example my rain series uses actual shadows, water, rain, plexiglass letters.

The typography that I develop for myself and my clients are multi-layered. I will never just create a graphic piece and let it stay at the digital level. I will continue to implement it into a photo shoot or composition that gives life, texture, and depth to a project. Its almost hilarious that people get tricked in thinking my work is fake. In our current society and understanding of digital art, the “wow” factor does not only come from the initial viewing of my work, but also the realization of how many hours went into each photo.” – Evan Shuster
